First of all, we want to say a big thank you to all of you who have reached out, shared words of encouragement, prayed and done so much more for us during this time of difficulty. These have helped to keep us going. We don’t want to think about where we would be without the prayers of many people — literally around the world! — praying for our son and for us.
Our son had his second surgery on March 24. Out of the four surgeries he will need, this was the surgery with the most risk, the longest recovery time, and so on. The surgery took about eight hours and had one small complication, but overall, it was a success. For this, we praise God! The third surgery will happen sometime between when he is four and six months of age (July through September), though right now the doctors are leaning toward the latter end of that period rather than the start.
Since that time, our son has been in recovery in various sections of the hospital. His first stop was the PICU, or pediatric intensive care unit. The original forecast was a 2-3 week stay; however, he ended up staying there for over a month. Helping our son re-learn how to breathe on his own took longer than expected, and his recovery has been slow overall. The PICU staff are wonderful, and we made friends with several of them.
